Tips to Streamline Your Move

By Judy Putnam

There's no doubt about it, packing and moving can be stressful. To find out how to save a lot of unnecessary headaches, we decided to speak to an expert on just what to expect from a moving company. We posed our questions to Orlando Lynch, owner of Atlanta Peach Movers, for some tips on preparing for important matters that often go overlooked when planning a move.

Q: What should I expect from my mover?
A: You should expect guidance, honest answers and a fair and accurate estimate. You should ask questions and get the right answers. You should discuss with the company's representative any concerns you have so that they can be properly addressed.

Q: Is it important to get references or are all movers the same?
A: Yes, and you may also want to contact the local Better Business Bureau to ask about the company's complaint record and how the complaints were resolved. Ask what other organizations the company holds a membership in such as the American Moving and Storage, the Georgia Movers Association or local chamber of commerce. Also, moving companies in Georgia are regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission. You may visit their Web site, psc.state.ga.us, and click on transportation for a list of licensed movers.

Q: What about insurance for my household goods? Do I need it?
A: All licensed movers must provide liability for the value of goods it transports. There are different levels of liability and it's important to understand the amount of protection provided and the additional charges that may apply. The level of liability can vary so be aware of the amount of protection and the charges for each option. Movers are required to provide you with information on what it will cost you to place a value on your shipment. Also before purchasing additional insurance, you may want to check with your homeowners' policy to see what coverage you may have.

Q: How do I get an estimate on the cost of my move?
A: There are two types of estimates, binding and non-binding. A binding estimate must clearly describe the shipment and all services provided. It should be in writing and a copy submitted to you before you move. The quote will not change unless you add additional services. A non-binding estimate is not a bid or contract but is provided to give you a general idea of the cost of the move, but it does not bind the mover to the estimated cost. Non-binding estimates must also be submitted in writing and clearly describe the shipment and all services provided.

Q: Should I pack my own boxes or let the movers take care of the task?
A: Customers may choose to pack themselves. Ask the moving company if they offer free packing classes or if they can provide packing tips. Also it's important to understand that items are not covered by the moving company if the customer packs themselves. You should always have all valuables, such as jewelry, guns and watches, along with any items of extra ordinary value, safely secured before your moving company arrives. The moving company's policy does not cover the transportation of these items.

Q: Why should I call in advance?
A: Calling in advance assures you will have ample time to get your questions answered and gain a greater understanding of the moving process. The moving company offers expert advice to streamline your move. All too often, we receive panicked calls from stressed-out customers who could have made an informed decision had they called in advance.

Q: Why should I avoid a moving company that provides the lowest estimate?
A: You are not buying a washing machine where the lowest price is the best deal. Select a moving company that will assure you that you are getting capable and experienced movers and one whose reputation is solidly built on high-standards and high-quality. Remember, when labor is concerned, quality doesn't cost, it pays.

With 20 years experience in the moving business, Orlando Lynch founded Atlanta Peach Movers in 1999.
