Active Adults and Active Communities Flock to Georgia

By Tammy M. Vinson

The Baby Boomers are at it again. This pioneer generation is revolutionizing the way we look at traditional retirement, changing the meaning to include everything from active lifestyles and to newer, hipper retirement destinations.

These days, Georgia is at the top of their list. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Georgia has the fastest growing active adult population of any state east of Colorado. With an overall growth of 43 percent, Georgia is quickly becoming the new Florida for retirees.

Active adult communities in Atlanta are offering a broad range of opportunities for retirees. Companies like Del Webb, a brand of Pulte homes, seek to provide communities where older adults can age in place and still remain actively involved in physical fitness and social activities.

“Del Webb is focused on providing an active adult lifestyle with an emphasis on active,” says Jan Cooper, vice president of operations for Del Webb. “Harley’s are replacing horseshoes and skydiving is replacing shuffleboard. Today’s active adults are aging with attitude and shattering the stereotypes of a quiet, knitting-on-the-front-porch retirement. They want a facilitated lifestyle that encourages a broad range of activity.”

Between 1990 and 2000, the 65 and over population increased by 30 percent in the metro Atlanta region. In six out of 10 of the region’s counties, the active adult population growth exceeded the growth of the general population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
