From second homes to year-round, buyers’ discover mountain living
By Josh Spilker
Atlanta residents are forgetting cities like Ft. Lauderdale or Naples and replacing them with the likes of Georgia mountain retreats such as Ellijay, Dahlonega or Blue Ridge. The tough traffic, the inexhaustible pavement and the menace of hurricanes are pushing Atlanta vacationers and second-home owners away from the beach and toward the scenic North Georgia Mountains.
“I think people are tired of Florida and they want to go where it’s not crowded. There’s more of a sense of community here,” says Ellen Grant, co-owner of Overland Trails/Heritage Homes based out of Ellijay, Ga. “And you’ve got nature up here, you don’t have skyscrapers and concrete.”
Creating your own weekend getaway is the specialty of Overland Trails/Heritage Log Homes. They craft log homes that are well-appointed with all modern amenities and usually run over 2,000 square feet. Overland Trails/Heritage Log Homes will build in a community neighborhood, or on a private lot with its own gorgeous views.
“People are nostalgic about log homes,” continues Grant. “I think sometimes people are trying to get back to their roots. Now they can build big beautiful homes that are accompanied by all the modern amenities.”
