Do Amenities Promote Friendships?

By Pamela A. Keene

Atlanta’s year-round mild climate does wonders for the souls of communities throughout the region. The city is known around the world for its hospitality. Atlanta is also a bit of a transient town, but more people are moving in and staying than ever before.

If a community has amenities, it’s a sure bet that tennis courts are included. Today’s developers are including lighted courts; some are building indoor facilities as well. Golf is also big in Atlanta, with communities offering championship play, luxury golf and clubhouses that offer fine dining and social events. Many are also including designated greenspace, parks, hiking and nature trails.

Developers today know that to create a true sense of community, amenities represent the common ground that connects neighbors with neighbors.

Fore: Golf and Golf Carts

No matter what your handicap, an afternoon on the golf course provides a time for socializing. Some of the city’s biggest business deals are still solidified during 18 holes chasing a round ball.

Even for people who don’t play, the golf cart has become an integral part of the community. Wide sidewalks line the streets of newer communities so that people can use golf-cart transportation, literally shrinking the distance between homes and amenities and opening up a world of social options.

“Part of our extensive amenities package includes sidewalks wide enough to accommodate golf carts,” says Rayna Coggins, marketing director for Carter Grove Plantation, a new golf-course community being built north of Atlanta in Cartersville. “We’re a master-planned community that will have retail and commercial space as well. We want people who live here to have everything they need&ndashgrocery store, shopping, fun center, retail&ndashwithout having to leave the community once they’re home from work.”
