Atlanta’s Healthy Job Market

By Maria Lameiras

After a dip in available jobs and a spike in the unemployment rate four years ago, metro Atlanta’s job market has rebounded vigorously, with a three-year trend of job growth in the metro area and recent employment levels outperforming the state’s numbers. In September, metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate was 4.4 percent, lower than the Georgia average of 4.6 percent and on par with seasonally adjusted national figures.

“Atlanta’s job market is very strong. We have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation and, even more critical, is that almost 2.4 million people go to work each day in the Atlanta area. That is a huge employment base, and last year the number of net new jobs added in the area was more than 69,000,” says Sam Williams, president of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. ”This certainly emphasizes that the whole health of the region is extremely robust. Atlanta is consistently one of the top four job markets in the United States.“
