DeKalb offers the most even balance of jobs and housing of any metro
Atlanta county for its 665,865 residents. Industries find DeKalb’s
wide mix of transportation favorable for employees. It is served by
MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority), four major interstates,
numerous truck terminals and good rail sites; DeKalb Peachtree Airport
is the second busiest air facility in Georgia and home to most of
the region’s corporate aircraft; Hartsfield International Airport
is just six miles away from the county line.
DeKalb has positioned itself to be in the forefront of biomedical
technology. Within a one-mile stretch of road on “Clifton Corridor”
are concentrated some of the Southeast’s greatest biomedical
organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control (the only
federal agency outside Washington, D.C.), Yerkes Primate Center, Emory
University’s Rollins Research Center and the American Cancer
Society National Headquarters.
DeKalb’s strong hospitality industry attracted many visitors
during the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, along with Olympic venues at Stone
Mountain Park.
DeKalb has an international flavor, with the highest concentration
of Hispanics and Asians in Georgia, and is one of the largest refugee
resettlement locations in the country. The Chamber of Commerce is
very involved with its growing international community.
DeKalb’s educational facilities are noted for excellence. The
public school system has the largest international student center
for helping both students and families adjust to life in the United
States. DeKalb’s outstanding Special Education Program attracts
students from other counties in need of special services. Over 82
percent of DeKalb high school graduates go onto to college or post-secondary
school.
DeKalb’s two technical schools and six other institutions of
higher learning provide an educational environment beneficial to both
students and the community at large.
Home buyers may choose from upscale Dunwoody, the small-town, artistic
charm of Decatur, the Victorian homes in Stone Mountain, and growing
southeastern DeKalb, where land is open and prices more modest. Emory
University is ringed by well-groomed apartments and small houses that
are heavily populated with students and staff.
