Nestled among hundreds of acres of picturesque, protected wilderness in the Chattahoochee National Forest, Gilmer County has long been a getaway-turned-relocation destination for those attracted to farming community values, natural beauty and small town charm. But Gilmer is not the sleepy little agricultural enclave it once was. These days, it is growing as fast as the iconic north Georgia apples that the county is famous for — 60 percent of all the apple trees in the state bloom there.
Lucky for longtime Gilmer lovers and new residents alike, the blossoming economic development has not diminished the county’s serene mountain-country appeal, or its stunning landscapes. Today, residents can still spend weekends sporting and relaxing around Carter’s Lake, Amicalola State Park or Fort Mountain State Park, visiting mountain art galleries or shopping and strolling through historic downtown Ellijay and its new 80,000-square-foot county building. All this before returning to a fulfilling career in the popular fields of manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, processing, research and development, telecommunications, tourism or entrepreneurship.
And because Gilmer is a place people want to stay for a lifetime, the county’s retirement community is growing, too. As long-time vacationers settle in to spend their golden years in the quiet mountains, a 55-plus active adult community, The Summit, is taking shape in Ellijay to accommodate the county’s expanding retirement market.
A close-knit educational community, the Gilmer County School District strives to make smaller class sizes and small town support work to students’ best advantage. Its students’ average test scores approach or exceed state and national averages across the board.
