Barrow County Georgia

Situated between Atlanta and the home of the bulldogs in Athens, Ga., Barrow County is known for its thriving businesses and its gorgeous recreation areas. A buzzing population of over 72,000 residents enjoys careers in sales, education, office support, construction and production. Barrow Schools continually rank high under the leadership of the county’s nationally recognized Board of Education.

Among the area’s many outdoor recreation sites is Ft. Yargo State Park in Winder. The lake always has something going on with regattas, camping, sailing and hiking available throughout the year. This nearly 2,000-acre natural playground is perfect for families and for a romantic afternoon by the lake. Likewise, Auburn’s James Shackelford Memorial Park is an ideal place to spend a sunny afternoon enjoying three picnic pavilions, walking trails and both Sandy Creek and Appachee River running throughout the space.

A popular spot for foodies is the spectacular Chateau Elan Winery, just north of Winder. With a clean, rolling landscape and multiple opportunities for wine tasting, exploring, dining and lodging, the chateau offers many of the lures of luxe city life within a small town atmosphere.

Barrow has been exploding with growth over the past few years. Ranked 12th in the country in terms of growth in 2008, the county continues to build and expand. Current projects include the construction of the West Winder Bypass and a 42,000-square-foot Army Reserve Training Center in Winder.
