Picture Perfect: Get Fantastic Fall Photos at These Metro Atlanta Locations
Garrard Landing Park, Roswell
Fall is the perfect time for a family photo session. The weather is crisp, the light is spectacular and holiday card season is right around the corner. And while many people head to the north Georgia mountains to take advantage of the jewel-toned leaves in places like Amicalola Falls and Tallulah Gorge (which are amazing), there are many locations right here in metro Atlanta that provide equally breathtaking—and unique—backdrops. Whether you’re ITP (Inside the Perimeter) or OTP (Outside the Perimeter), you’ll be able to find a site that fits your family’s personality for a picture-perfect photo opp. Check out these options as you make plans for your upcoming family photo shoot.
Inside the Perimeter
Located in the heart of midtown Atlanta, Piedmont Park is the quintessential fall photo spot for local residents. With more than 180 acres of wide-open space, walking trails and the beautiful Lake Clara Meer, the park offers a host of wonderful spots for a photographer to do great work. Yet, what truly sets this locale apart is the opportunity to have the Atlanta skyline as part of the setting for your family photo. Of course, with the popularity of the park, which is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, you’ll want to work with your photographer to steer clear of the most crowded spots and times of day.
While fall colors and leaves are the norm for photos this time of year, sometimes you want something a bit different. If that’s the case, head to historic Downtown Decatur for your annual photo shoot. The square and surrounding funky shops offer a cool city vibe for images, and the gazebo is an excellent place to take great pictures. Since it is a downtown area, it can get quite busy, so consider your options regarding the best time of day to arrive. You’ll also have to pay for parking. And since Decatur is a big draw for fall festivals, you’ll need to coordinate around any special events.
Man-made Murphey Candler Lake is the heart of this 135-acre multi-use park in Brookhaven. In addition to the serene setting provided by the lake itself, the surrounding amenities offer fantastic photo opportunities. The primary trail is a two-mile loop around the lake and features wooded areas, wetlands, bridges and much more along the way. There also are several pavilions located within the park. And you never know when wildlife will become part of your special photos, as Murphey Candler Park is home to deer, Canadian geese and Mallards, among other animal friends. Without a doubt, you’re sure to find just the right backdrop in what is recognized as the largest park in Brookhaven.
Outside the Perimeter
For a decidedly different photo opp, head to Fausett Farms in Dawsonville. Opening in late September and running through most of October, the family-owned farm’s sunflower patch is a can’t miss setting. Each year, the facility plants more than 15 acres of sunflowers (about 900,000 flowers in all), which bloom brilliantly in early fall. The amazing flowers will give any photo a sunny and vibrant feel. And when you’re done taking pictures, you can enjoy a day on the farm with mule-drawn wagon rides, funnel cakes and more. The charge to enjoy the flowers is $10 per car for parking and $35 for professional photographers who are onsite with clients.
If you’re looking for a family photo that has some small-town charm, then Downtown Acworth is the site for you. The downtown district has a wide variety of backdrop options, from streets lined with charming shops and boutiques to Frana Brown Park (with green space and a lovely fountain) to the trains passing by at Acworth Depot. The City of Acworth is easily accessible off of I-75, so meeting your photographer there is a breeze. And its location 30 miles north of Atlanta ensures that you’ll have access to the fall beauty that north Georgia boasts while still being within the realm of the metro area.
Parks offer myriad background options for family photos, and one of the best OTP locales is Garrard Landing Park in Roswell. Open areas, grassy banks, creeks and shaded walking trails abound in this public city park, which is located along the banks of the Chattahoochee River. What’s more, there is an enchanting covered bridge that is a favorite among professional photographers. It’s a secluded gem that will provide your family with an ideal setting amidst Mother Nature’s seasonal grandeur. And with its location right near the Fulton/Gwinnett county line, it’s close by while giving you the feeling that you’re away from it all as you focus on capturing special family moments on film.
