Fitness should be fun, right? While there’s nothing wrong with a good jog on the treadmill at the gym, sometimes you need something a little different. Fortunately, metro Atlanta is home to an array of unique exercise classes — each of which will take you out of your comfort zone to put you in the zone. And for those who are new to town, these options offer a great way to meet some fitness buddies as you get in shape. So sign up and get ready to sweat… and socialize!

Laugh It Off

They say that laughter is the best medicine, but it also makes a pretty good workout. That’s why laughter yoga, which uses voluntary laughter exercises to boost cardiovascular health and mood, took off in the mid-1990s and has become a unique and popular fitness option. Laughter Yoga Atlanta meets once a month at Atlanta Kick in Buckhead for a free community laughter yoga circle, led by director Celeste Greene, who is a certified laughter yoga teacher. A new schedule will begin in September, so be sure to keep an eye on the website for meeting times.

Participants roll in the laughs at a recent Laughter Yoga class.

The Gloves are On

You don’t have to get in the ring to get the most out of a boxing workout. Head to Title Boxing Club (with locations in Alpharetta and Kennesaw) and experience the signature Power Hour, a full-body, 60-minute workout that has you throwing jabs, crosses, hooks and uppercuts at a 100-pound bag during eight boxing rounds. The hour also includes a warm-up, core workout and cool down. In all, you can expect to burn hundreds of calories with the combination of cardio and strength training. (And if you don’t have an hour, the club also offers 30- and 45-minute classes throughout the week).

Take to the Sky

Take your workouts sky high at Sky Zone. The indoor trampoline park, which is popular with kids of all ages and boasts five metro locations, has found a way to help you burn up to 1,000 calories with its SkyFit program. Jump and twist into great shape with the help of an instructor, who leads you through an hour-long workout focusing on your legs, arms and core. You can enjoy the program through a monthly membership ($19.99) or on a per-class basis ($10 per class, $5 for the first class).

Run Away with the Circus

Have you ever wanted to run away and join the circus? Well, you can get a taste of that life — and an amazing workout — at the Circus Arts Institute. The facility’s Circus Arts Fitness program is a one-of-a-kind opportunity that includes work on the trapeze, circus rings, aerial fabric, tightwire and balance board, as well as the chance to hula-hoop, juggle, hand-balance and more. Work at your own pace as you strengthen your body and mind, increase your flexibility, boost your coordination and learn new skills with this totally non-traditional fitness experience.

Pound It Out

Put those old ‘80s air guitar moves to good use at a POUND class. During the workout, which combines Pilates, yoga and plyometrics, you’ll pound the floor with weighted plastic drumsticks (called Ripstix®) to a rhythmic beat. It’s a full-body workout that will have you burning up to 900 calories and sculpting your way to a slimmer and stronger physique while tapping into the rock star you know you are. The classes are designed for all fitness levels and can be found at an array of fitness centers (from gyms to YMCAs) throughout metro Atlanta.
