City Spotlight: Lilburn
'Small Town. Big Business'

As one of the first Gwinnett County cities to develop as population growth radiated in Atlanta, Lilburn is rooted in the railroad that still runs hourly through Old Town near the city’s municipal building each day. Relocators moving to Lilburn can expect plenty of affordable housing, easy access to Atlanta, a great school district and its diverse population, according to Nikki Perry, the city’s public relations manager.

Lilburn, home to approximately 13,344 residents, was first incorporated in 1910 and is named after Lilburn Trigg Myers, the railroad superintendent for the Seaboard Air Line Railway.

Located only 18 miles from Downtown Atlanta, the city’s tagline is “Small Town. Big Difference.” because it has the neighborly feeling of a small town, but its daytime population increases by nearly 12,000 daily to about 25,000 with its business community — the city has 890 licensed businesses.

Nikki Perry, public relations manager for the City of Lilburn, says Money Magazine named Lilburn No. 5 on its 2013 list of Best Affordable Places to Live in America for providing both longtime and new residents a great place to call home.

“Lilburn has a well-balanced mix of families who have lived here for decades and multicultural young families who just moved to town in the past five to 10 years,” Perry adds. “School activities, youth sports and events in Lilburn City Park help create a community identity that is all-inclusive.”

Lilburn is also home to the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, which is the largest Hindu temple outside of India. Thousands of people attend events annually at the Mandir, and 200,000 visitors tour the architectural structure each year. The Mandir is the biggest tourist attraction in Gwinnett County.

As far as what’s drawing relocators to Lilburn, Perry says a number of offerings, such as the city’s living and retail developments, expansions, companies relocating, restaurant openings and housing developments have all caught the attention of people moving to Lilburn. “In 2014, Main Street was realigned to open up new ground for development in the heart of the city,” she continues. “A new city hall and library building will open at the end of 2016 on the new Main Street.”

Across the street, a seven-acre project scheduled to open in 2017 will include shopping, dining and upscale apartments. This is a prime location, within walking distance of existing shops and restaurants, Lilburn City Park and the Camp Creek Greenway, and only 4 miles from Interstate 85, Perry says.

The city also recently annexed property for a new subdivision in the esteemed Parkview High School cluster. The neighborhood will have an amenities package and 140-plus homes starting in the $300,000s. In addition, a subdivision of townhouses was just approved for construction on Arcado Road near US 29.

“The Lilburn City Council is focused on developing high-density housing that is more attractive to young professionals and retirees,” Perry says.

Other city additions on the horizon include a new building that will house Lilburn City Hall and the Gwinnett County Library’s Lilburn Branch, which Perry says is going to benefit residents in many ways. “The current library building is one of the first built in Gwinnett County, and it does not have room for the new programming and technology that other branches offer,” she continues. “The new building will be double the size and will offer expanded programs and the latest technology.”

Having all of the city administrative offices in one building will also improve customer service, especially for business owners who now shuffle between the Planning and Development Office on First Avenue and City Hall on Main Street, Perry says. “Also, the building will attract more people to Main Street, where they can visit local businesses and use amenities like City Park and the Greenway.”
