Your Guide to Moving, Living, and Thriving in Metro Atlanta

STEM Excellence at Atlanta area Colleges and Universities

STEM Excellence at Atlanta area Colleges and Universities

According to the Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education (ARCHE), a consortium of 18 colleges and universities across the Atlanta metropolitan region, the area ranks in the top 10 nationally in multiple fields of study, including Information Technology and Computer Science, Engineering, Natural and Physical Sciences, and Education degrees. Atlanta is also a leader in bachelor’s degrees conferred, graduate and undergraduate enrollment, and grant research economic impact. Metro Atlanta residents truly are among the most highly educated people in the country.

In fact, a 2024 report from Forbes concluded that nearly 60 percent of residents have a bachelor’s degree and nearly 30 percent have graduate degrees. In comparison, only about half of adult Americans hold a college degree. And when it comes to STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), ARCHE reports that metro Atlanta is a national leader in educating students in these fields as well. Thanks to local colleges and universities, Atlanta ranks second nationally in total IT and Computer Science degrees, second in master’s degrees in IT and Computer Science, third in the nation in undergraduate degrees in IT and Natural Sciences, fourth in undergraduate Engineering and Physical Sciences, third in doctoral Engineering, and third in doctoral Education.

With these facts in mind, we dug a little deeper into the programs available to students at six ARCHE member institutions: Brenau University, Emory University, Spelman College, Kennesaw State University, Mercer University, and Oglethorpe University. We asked about new degree programs, notable school rankings and awards earned, and student success stories. Each school’s responses (edited for length) are as follows:
